Post-Viewing Discussion Questions
The following questions will help students process information from the documentary and deepen their understanding of the issues presented.
WHY IS VAPING NICOTINE SO ADDICTIVE FOR TEENS?
Possible responses might include:
- "Too many dealers are selling it"
- "Candy flavors entice teens"
- "Frontal lobe is not fully developed"
Teacher Note:
Discuss how the teenage brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex responsible for decision-making and impulse control, is still developing until the mid-20s. This makes teens more susceptible to addiction. Additionally, the potency of today's vapes and marketing strategies that appeal to young people contribute to the problem. Emphasize that addiction risk is higher when use begins at a younger age.
HOW MUCH NICOTINE IS IN A VAPE?
Students might respond with:
- "3% to 5%"
- "No way to know, especially if vapes are bought on the street"
- "10% to 20%"
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A FRIEND THAT YOU SAW VAPING TOBACCO?
Responses might include:
- "Nothing"
- "Tell them you care about them and they need to get help"
- "Tell their parents"
- "Tell the school"
Teacher Note:
This question provides an opportunity to discuss peer support strategies and responsible actions. Emphasize the importance of expressing concern from a place of caring rather than judgment. Role-play conversations students might have with friends they're concerned about. Discuss when and how to involve trusted adults while respecting friendships. Remind students that getting help for someone who might be developing a tobacco use problem is an act of friendship, not betrayal.
